Sketchbook: Sharing A Laugh

Sketch N' Wash on Bristol board

Back in January, I posted a sketch of 4 potential faces for the Undertaker. Although I posted his model sheet a couple of weeks later, the character wasn't done. I knew what he looked like, and a story needs more than that. So I filled out his history with a photograph from his past, and showed off his power a couple of weeks ago with Whoosh! Today's Sketchbook entry captures his other side - a friendly, gentle soul who prefers to spend his evenings with a cup of tea and his family.

Or what remains of it. The Undertaker's wife and son died, along with Cheshire's father and littermates. For several long years before the comic opens, these two have only each other for family. Cheshire's grief when the Undertaker dies won't mean anything to my readers unless my art can convey the werewolf's affection for her adopted grandfather.

I started drawing this almost two months ago and realized I didn't have any idea what the furnishings in the Castle should look like, so I spent a bit of time sketching forms and shapes that eventually led to some nifty-looking candle sconces and some really lame, nondescript furniture. But given my limited time, I choose to focus on the characters and trust their surroundings to follow.
