Sketchbook: Whoosh! (in progress)
Pencil on Bristol board
Before, when I featured the Undertaker in the Sketchbook, I was trying to show the warm, contemplative wise old man who loved his family. Here you can see why he's the Tyrruhn, or Ruhn-master. Tyrruhn can manipulate the Ruhn-energy around them, affecting the weather, the environment - or the halls of a castle if one of its rooms contains a portal that opens into a sunken watery kingdom.
I'm pretty happy with his face, his hands, and his stance in the midst of his impromptu river. I originally drew him with a grimace of effort on his face, but realized as I was drawing that his expression needed to show strength of will but not anger or strain. The Undertaker only wields such power in defense of the castle.
Although a lot of this comic's mythology derives from Western traditions, the Eastern understanding of life energy underlies the foundation of my beliefs, and thus the comic's depiction of Ruhn and Ruhn-masters. Tyrruhn use their awareness and their connection to the energy of the universe in the same way as masters of Aikido and Tai Chi - with perfect clarity and a kind of serenity even amidst chaos.
