Sketchbook: Snow Jadinn

Snow

Well, technically, this isn't a sketchbook entry, seeing as how it's not a drawing. But it's also technically a holiday, so I'd rather wish everybody a Happy New Year and show off my snow-sculpting techniques than write a "real" blog post.

Part of the trouble with being a "professional" artist is that you spend a lot more time seriously honing your craft and less time playing. When I was a kid, I did a lot of really weird, random creative stuff. I'd pick up anything from soap to Starburst wrappers and see if I could turn it into art.

As an adult, my artistic time is far more precious. If I want to make this comic work, I have to give it every minute I have. It's fun, but I miss just playing around. I was looking for stuff to photograph and not finding much, so I thought maybe I'd build a snowman. Of course, this is me, and I can't ever do anything simple. A snowman became a gargoyle, and eventually a sculpture of Jadinn.

Pretty good, considering I haven't made a real snowman in about 10 years.
